You have an attention problem.
I know.
That probably wasn’t what you wanted to hear. It’s much easier to blame the algorithm. We’ve all done it.
“Instagram just isn’t what it used to be.”
“My reach has disappeared.”
“Nobody sees my posts anymore.”
Maybe. Or maybe your content simply didn’t give people a reason to stop.
Imagine you’re standing in the middle of Times Square. Screens are flashing. People are talking. Cars are beeping. Music is playing.
Now imagine trying to have a conversation with someone.
That’s Instagram.
Every single post is competing for exactly the same thing.
Attention.
Followers, likes, shares and saves are simply a by-product of attention. The moment you stop chasing the algorithm and start chasing attention…
Everything will change for your growth.
Most people believe Instagram rewards good content. But what I think is good content you may not and vice versa. So we have to look at what Instagram deems good.
Instagram actually rewards content that keeps people on their app. That’s its job. The longer people stay on the platform, the more successful Instagram is. So naturally, if your content keeps people reading, swiping, saving and sharing, Instagram has a reason to show it to more people. This is how your piece of content goes viral and ends up on the FYP.
Think about it.
If you owned Instagram, which post would you rather recommend?
a) A photo someone looked at for two seconds before scrolling past?
Or
b) A carousel someone spent forty seconds reading before sending it to a friend?
The answer is obvious.
The goal isn’t to create more content. The goal is to create content people genuinely spend time with.
This is one reason why carousels continue to perform so well.
Now that you understand some of the fundamentals when it comes to content that outperforms it looks like Instagram is favouring you :), let's look at the two jobs every high-performing carousel has (that you can implement today).
Attention earns the click.
Curiosity earns the swipe.
Attention makes someone stop. Curiosity makes them stay.
Without attention…
Nobody notices your content.
Without curiosity…
Nobody finishes it.
If there’s one thing I hope you remember from this article so far, it’s those two words.
Attention. Curiosity.
Because everything else you will implement, builds on top of them.
A carousel is a conversation
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people treating carousels like PowerPoint presentations. You know the ones where tiny text is squeezed into a slide with huge paragraphs? No breathing room and I can tell you that nobody opens Instagram hoping to read an essay squeezed onto multiple squares.
People are scrolling while waiting for a coffee. Standing in the supermarket queue. Lying in bed before they fall asleep.
So naturally your content should feel effortless to consume. As in one idea, one point and one clear takeaway.
Imagine reading a children’s book. Short sentences. Big illustrations. Lots of white space.
Now imagine reading a university textbook. The information might be just as valuable. But one feels enjoyable. The other feels like work.
Your carousel should feel much closer to the children’s book. This analogy does not mean easy means unintelligent. It means you’ve done the hard work for your reader.
⸻
Here’s what makes them so powerful. A carousel can educate, it can tel a story, showcase a transformation, explain a process, answer FAQs, become a portfolio, a mood board, and so much more. You can share images, text, videos all in one carousel, you can animate it, make it look beautiful, you can keep it on brand. There is so much to a single carousel.
One format.
Endless possibilities.
Unlike a single image, a carousel gives you room to build momentum. Every swipe creates another opportunity to hold someone’s attention. Not to mention that each view from one slide counts as a view, for example if you have 8 slides to a carousel and someone views it once each slide that is 8 views.
⸻
The Carousel Framework I Teach
If you are new here then you may not know a bit of my back story. I'll summarise the important part for this article. Before House of Templates, I grew my Instagram account from 0 to 100,000 followers in just six weeks.
From there Instagram growth became my business, I spent years helping businesses grow on Instagram.
My clients reached millions of people organically. My students went on to achieve results they never thought were possible. And one thing became incredibly clear.
The accounts growing the fastest weren’t posting more content.
They were creating content that people couldn’t stop consuming.
And over the years, my content frameworks still outperform. Because my frameworks are simple and repeatable.
⸻
Let me share one of my carousel frameworks with you so you can go and implement this immediately.
First, the good news.
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel every time you create a carousel. In fact, I’d encourage you not to. The best creators aren’t staring at a blank Canva page every Monday morning wondering what to post. They have a framework.
Think about your favourite TV series. Every episode follows a similar structure. It starts with something interesting.
It builds suspense.
It answers questions.
It leaves you wanting more.
Your carousel should do exactly the same thing.
Here’s the framework I come back to time and time again.
⸻
Slide 1
The Hook
This is the most important slide in your entire carousel. Its job is to stop the scroll and earn the next swipe.
Think curiosity, emotion, people thinking “I need to know what happens next.”
For example, instead of saying:
Five Branding Tips
Try:
I wasted three years building the wrong brand.
Or…
The biggest mistake almost every business owner makes online.
See the difference?
One tells people what’s inside. The other makes them curious enough to find out. Attention earns the click. Curiosity earns the swipe.
⸻
Slide 2
The Second Hook
This is one of the most overlooked slides in a carousel. Most people assume everyone starts reading from Slide 1. That’s not always the case. Instagram will share your carousel from slide two if slide one didn't perform well.
That’s why your second slide should still make sense on its own. Think of it as your backup hook.
It should continue the story, reinforce the problem and give someone another reason to keep swiping.
Never waste Slide 2.
⸻
Slide 3
The Problem
This is where your reader needs to feel understood. If they don’t see themselves in your content…
They’ll leave.
Make them think, “She’s literally describing me.” That’s the moment you’ve created connection.
⸻
Slide 4
The Mindset Shift
Now explain why the problem exists. Don’t just tell people what they’re doing wrong. Help them understand why. People remember explanations far longer than instructions. When someone understands the reason behind something…
They’ll rarely forget it.
⸻
Slides 5 to 7
The Solution
Now it’s time to teach. Not everything you know. Just enough that someone can close Instagram feeling smarter than when they opened it. One of the biggest mistakes creators make is trying to fit an entire course into one carousel. Leave people with one clear transformation.
Remember…
Confused people don’t take action. Clear people do.
⸻
Final Slide
Give Them Somewhere To Go
Please…
Don’t finish with…
“Follow for more.” or "Save this for later"' "Share it with a friend." "Join your email list." "Watch the full tutorial."
Everyone says it. Instead, answer the question every person is subconsciously asking.
“What’s in it for me?”
Give them a reason to follow, to save, share, like.
For example…
Instead of saying:
Download my free guide.
Say:
Want to lose 10lbs without giving up every food you love? Comment 'GUIDE' and I'll send you my free guide where I walk you through the exact system myself and 200 students used to lose 10lbs in 3 weeks while still enjoying the foods we love.
See the difference?
One tells people what to do.
The other tells them why they should care.
People don’t take action because you’ve asked them to. They take action because they understand what they’ll gain. Every call to action should answer one simple question:
“What’s in it for me?”
If you can answer that clearly… then your conversions will improve almost immediately.
⸻
Five Simple Ways To Keep People Swiping
The last thing that will help you immensely is understanding how you can keep people glued to your carousel.
⸻
1. Open A Loop
Don’t tell people everything immediately. Create a little mystery. Every slide should answer one question while quietly creating another. Think of it like opening one small door at a time. People naturally want to know what’s behind the next one.
⸻
2. One Idea Per Slide
If your slide has three different messages… It has no message.
Simplify. One thought. One takeaway.
Your audience shouldn’t need to work hard to understand your content.
⸻
3. Use White Space
White space isn’t wasted space. It’s breathing room, and I'm not just saying this because I love design and branding.
Luxury brands understand this better than almost anyone. Nothing feels premium when every centimetre is filled with text. The same applies to your carousel.
Your content doesn’t need more words. Just keep it clear.
⸻
4. Challenge What People Believe
One of the quickest ways to earn attention is to interrupt expectations.
For example, instead of saying,
“Post consistently.”
Try…
“Posting every day isn’t your problem.”
People stop scrolling when something doesn’t match what they expected to read.
That’s attention.
⸻
5. End With Something Worth Saving
Ask yourself one question.
Would I save this?
If the answer is no… Keep improving it.
People save frameworks. Checklists. Processes. Templates. Reference guides.
Give them something they’ll want to come back to next week.
⸻
Five Carousel Ideas You Can Create This Week
Still wondering what to post?
Start here.
Mistakes
“The biggest mistake I made when…”
People love recognising themselves in someone else’s mistakes.
⸻
Before & After
Transformation naturally creates curiosity.
Whether it’s branding.
Fitness.
Interior design.
Photography.
Marketing.
People love seeing progress.
⸻
Things I Wish I Knew Earlier
Simple.
Relatable.
Easy to write.
Powerful to read.
⸻
Behind The Scenes
Show people how something actually happens.
The process is often far more interesting than the finished result.
⸻
Myths
Challenge a common belief in your industry.
Just make sure you back it up with something genuinely helpful.
⸻
Before You Publish Your Next Carousel
Run through this checklist.
✓ Does my first slide earn attention?
✓ Does my second slide continue the curiosity?
✓ Is there only one idea per slide?
✓ Is the text easy to read?
✓ Is there enough white space?
✓ Would someone genuinely save this?
✓ Have I given people a clear next step?
If you answered “no” to more than one…
Don’t publish it yet.
Spend another ten minutes improving it.
One exceptional carousel will almost always outperform five average ones.
⸻
Three Things I Hope You Remember
✔ Attention earns the click. Curiosity earns the swipe.
Everything else builds on top of those two things.
✔ Your carousel isn’t there to tell people everything.
It’s there to make people want the next slide.
✔ You don’t need to reinvent your content every week.
Build a framework once.
Tell a different story each time.
⸻

Before You Go…

Have I earned attention?
Have I created enough curiosity to keep it?
If the answer is yes…
You’re already ahead of most creators.
Because Instagram isn’t looking for more content.
It’s looking for content people can’t help but finish reading.
